The countdown is on to the first event of the 2021 Longines Global Champions Tour and GCL as top riders and teams get ready for the electrifying season opener in one months’ time.
The stars of show jumping will be heading to Qatar for the all-important first leg which takes place at the world class AL SHAQAB equestrian centre in the capital city Doha from 4 to 6 March. It's all the play for as everyone aims to dominate the ranking and win a share of the overall season prize purse of € 25.9 million.
Once again the soaring architecture of the arena will be a magnificent backdrop to top-level show jumping with the first Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of the season taking place on Saturday 6 March where the champion will earn the first golden ticket to the LGCT Super Grand Prix at the GC Prague Playoffs in November.
The dazzling event at the Longines Arena at Al Shaqab has become a major sporting and social fixture in Doha growing in popularity each year. Members of the Royal Family of Qatar attended the event last year. His Highness The Father Emir, Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser and His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani arrived at the magnificent venue to the delight of the locals.
The first GCL showdown of the year gets underway with teams already selecting their key combinations to get valuable early points on the scoreboard. Team managers will work out their strategies with riders and owners to field the best pairings for the sand arena in Doha which is an expansive 120m x 80m where the action takes place under floodlights.
The LGCT event will take place the week following the exciting Commercial Bank CHI Al SHAQAB Presented by Longines (25-27 February) at the Longines Arena at AL SHAQAB with participation of top-ranking international and local riders. For more information please, click here.
With safety a priority, the Ministry of Public Health’s COVID-19 precautionary measures will be strictly enforced to ensure the safety and well-being of participants, equestrian fans, and all who are involved with the event.
My vision is clear. Only the best for the best.
