WELCOME TO DOHA

Doha is the capital and largest city in Qatar, located on a small peninsula extending into the Persian Gulf. Until the mid-19th century, Doha was a small fishing and pearling village but it has grown rapidly and today Doha welcomes you with its ultra-modern buildings, immense towers and superb museums, but above all its magnificent Corniche and crystal clear waters.

The Longines Global Champions Tour of Doha takes place at Al Shaqab, a world-leading equestrian centre. This centre was founded in 1992 by His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Amir with the mission to preserve and promote Arabian horses,  with the highest standards of breeding and showing of these amazing horses.

The centre also provides innovative, educational and competitive opportunities in all equestrian disciplines.

Al Shaqab is member of Qatar Foundation, founded in 1995 by His Highness, The Father Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani. The Qatar Foundation is chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. The Qatar Foundation carries out its mission through three strategic pillars: education, science and research, and community development.

World Cup 2022

The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the world's biggest football tournament,  was for the first time hosted in the Middle East and one of the most compact tournaments ever, meaning fans were able to watch up to two live matches per day.

All of the FIFA World Cup™ stadiums in Qatar are less than an hour’s travel time from one another. Fans could start their day in the south, cheering on their favourite team in Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah City in the afternoon, and head north to soak up the atmosphere at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor City later that day for the evening fixture.

Local Culture and Customs

It is polite to begin any conversation or request with a greeting first, for example ‘Good morning’.

As Qatar is a Muslim country, it is advisable to respect the local customs of dress, and to dress in a traditional and conservative, modest style as a visitor.

It is a fun and acceptable tradition to barter with shopkeepers in local souqs, offering a lower price than you intend to pay and working upwards to what you wish to spend.

It is advisable to ask permission before taking photographs or videos of people or sensitive sites.

Alcohol is a strictly regulated concession and usually only available in international hotels or restaurants.
